about

“My musical lineage starts with my biological father, who would jam occasionally with Ronnie Hawkins and Bo Diddley. My parents would take care of Robbie Roberts of the band No Less. My mother and father separated in 1966 and I started playing a year later when I was seven. At this time, my mother got us connected with another family, which became almost fatally dysfunctional. I ended up a ward of the courts and sent off to Training School, which is known as a ‘reform school’ (USA) or Borstol (UK). In the maximum security program for juveniles. My mother would come visit me occasionally, which she made up for by writing and bringing me every Rock and Roll magazine, Cream, Hit Parade, Rolling Stones, you name it! My cell was plastered with pictures, of Zepplin, Cooper, the Stones, etc. I spent hours in that cell playing my electric, unplugged guitar, courtesy of the psychologist. I was writing, composing, dreaming. Years later, I was in Toronto after getting my ‘walking papers’ form the Dice just before they were picked up by Bill Wyman of the Stones. Shit, I’ve heard of dodging a bullet, but what the fuck was that? My attitude had it coming, so I forged on in Groupoem. The singer couldn’t grasp the concept that he was contributing to something larger than himself, and the bass player thought he would be able to hide somewhere in the mix, because he didn’t learn to play his instrument in any improvised fashion after year 30. I wrote between 30-60 songs and got nothing in return.

The songs I have written were mostly done during my 18-hour lockups, using my memory to compose. I am now 60 years of age, and I feel tremendous sadness over my lack of success. As a young man it was the only love I knew. The only dream I had. Maybe I can drink myself to death while writing ‘the Book of Lies’ autobiography. It’ll be a comedy, how’s that for a twist?”

lyrics

Grab the gold, by any means,
Cheat the blind, that thing you do.
The hand of fate was dealt unseen,
Lost in the shuffle, so where are you?
Suspended in your desperation,
A mad man is bid to cover,
The wheel of fortune was ‘running hot’.
This thing that burns, so now you suffer,
Made your bed for the living dead,
Nothing left to do but keep,
That devil’s dream awake instead.
Cold fossil eyes upon you weep,
A stifled plea, gets choked out again,
Without redemption, but more sacrifice,
So the torture never ends,
Immobilized in the cruel device,
So this moment is undone.
You’re paralyzed in the silent scream,
The stillness is as you’ve become,
What a tangled web we’ve weaved.

For one more breathe, in the face of death
A voice inside you screams –
This thing that burns, can never learn,
From what your torture means,
Sickness, climbing down that web you’ve weaved,
Sickness
Scurrying down to suck the life, of everything.
