about

Often described as a free spirit and pixie, Tesla Rainbowdancer can sometimes be seen playing with East Van Circus-Gypsy band Blackberry Wood, and has also been involved with DTES musical projects including the DTES Samba Band and Women Rock. She has describes rhythm and poetry as a divine channel for her personal challenges such as sense of self-worth and single motherhood. More recently, she has discovered freestyle rap as a form of spiritual therapy.

lyrics

Yo, my name is River, I’m nine years old,
Some people call me crazy some people call me bold,
One thing’s for sure, you can’t deny,
You can’t make me do stuff, so don’t even try.

I’m a spark like no other, a soul beyond my years-
Let me tell my story, just lend me your ears,
I have to go to school dad tells me it’s good,
Sit in a desk and follow the rules.

I really don’t like it, it’s not my natural state,
They say it’s for my future but I won’t take the bait,
I’d rather play tag or catch toads in a pond,
I only wanna’ do stuff of which I am fond.
No amount of stickers will get me to be,
Anything other than just being me,
My teacher’s real sweet she let’s me read,
There’s 25 kids she’s got other needs.

So I hide at my desk and I withdraw,
I feel like a failure, I feel like a flop,
I sit with the shame that it’s wrong to be me,
I don’t got the words to share what I need.
I have these feelings that I just can’t express,
So I throw my books to show you I’m in distress,
I swim with the current I don’t gotta’ row,
Like a fish out of water I go where I can flow.

I know I don’t fit in, I know I disrupt,
It’s the only way to show you I’m all bottled up.
Sitting with the principal four hours straight,
Feeling put down, it teaches me to hate.

I have to sit still, I feel like a slave, for what?
A future at McDonalds? For minimum wage?

I’m your only son, I deserve the best,
Don’t send me to a place where my heart can’t rest,
My spirit is strong, I don’t want it to die.
I don’t know how much longer I can live this lie.
I love you daddy, you mean the world to me,
Can’t you see I’m a spirit that’s that longs to break free,
I know you want the best because you love me too,
I wanna make you happy but I don’t know what to do.

If I’m not happy, you’re not happy too,
We’re connected by a cord like a right and left shoe.

If you want the best for me let me follow my heart,
Let me play when it calls me let me let my life be my art,
My biggest gift to you is allow yourself to trust,
Trust my spirit it doesn’t want to rust.

Don’t forget, I’m just a kid once,
There’s no going back once the deed is done.
Because life is too short to not chase your passions,
Ignore your desires and your dreams will go crashing.
Trust that my spirit’s not meant to die,
My spirit knows what’s up and it wants to thrive,
I’m a bright little boy with a life ahead of me,
I conserve my full potential when my spirit’s left to be.

My name is river, I’m nine years old.
